Here is the plan for reworking Clerics.

---

CLERIC class

Clerics dedicate their lives to the gods of Good, and in exchange, their
prayers are answered by the gods - bestowing upon the cleric an element of
divine power.

Some clerics eventually choose to dedicate themselves to channeling
greater divine energies, while others combine the divine energies with
their strength of arms.  The former are known as Priests and the later as
Paladins.  All begin their training the same, however.

Here are some generalities about the class:
* Access to prayers are determined by Level, but prayer Power is determined
by relevant stats only
* Clerics must be positively-aligned.
* There should be some mechanism for changing one’s Path from Priest to
Paladin and vice-versa.  It should be so VERY COSTLY that it almost never
happens. Don’t like your Priest? Start a new character and try Paladin.
* Clerics cannot party with Necros

From levels 5-9 all Clerics get these spells:
Bless
standard bless for non-Necros.  At some higher level, let Priests
bless those who are not nearby?

Heal
limb-targetted healing, with some spill-over (ala Bolt); removes
bleeding

Cure
Cure for disease, poison, and maybe acid?  Low-power removes one
instance; higher-power removes multiples

Light

Remove Curse
from objects or people

Turn Undead
Single-target turn

Protection from Evil
standard PoE

At level 10, the Cleric chooses a Path, and then their prayers diverge.  Both
Paths can wear any armour.  Priests can wield only blunt weapons, while
Paladins can wield bladed weapons if Cleansed.  Their prayers, in no
particular order, are . . .

For the PRIEST:
Spiritual Hammer
1h or 2h - adding 1h allows for shield use

Purify Food & Drink
remove poison from food & drink?

Magic Vestment
low-ac shield-spell, or magical no-drop tunic

Last Rites
Get mana from corpse (reduce corpse enc?)

Speak With Dead
Deadspeak spell ... just because

Shield of Faith
shadows a shield w/ power

Mass Heal

Mass Cure

Banish Demons
Greater Turn for demons & undead ... affects whole room?

Mass Bless

Divine Intervention

Resurrection
Pray over a player’s corpse and a % of death-penalty is restored

For the PALADIN:
Cleanse Blade
ala cleansing

Bless Weapon
shadows Paladin’s wep w/ extra attacks

Divine Virtue
boosts Con

Holy Sword
1h or 2h sword.  This should be a VERY cool wep

Aura of Righteousness
ala Aura of War

Locate Evil
Maybe Detects Evil for whole room, or turns paladin toward the exit that has the biggest/baddest target in that direction

Smite Evil
Offensive prayer against single enemy

Purify Food & Drink

Holy Might
low-order Destructive Force against Evil

Aura of Courage
Party-wide resistance to stun effects

Storm of Vengeance
Offensive prayer: area effect

Does this sound like something you’d like to see?  We will only do the work if people are favorable toward the plan.  It’s not worth doing all of this work if people will only wish they had the “old” Clerics back.

I like it a ton Belly.  The two paths are great and divergent enough to statisfy those who like healing cleric over battle cleric.  For all those who want the old cleric back please forward them to me and I will deal with them. smile

i was iffy when i first saw this.. specialy with a paladin traditonaly more of a fighter then cleric.. but as for this.. i like the balance between the 2.. i like how paladine has a couple prays to boosts attacks and con.. but does not have the all might bless.. and the cleric looks like a undead/demon killing machine..  but is mostly a major party player.... well nevermind just reread.. the do get bless/heal/ect… but i do have to say, why play fighter when there is a paladin? im not trying to hate.. but.. i am saying im gonna start back to work on my cleric again.

Bless
Protection from Evil
Bless Weapon
Divine Virtue
Aura of Righteousness or Aura of Courage

plus on command damage attacks, cure, remove curse and turn

sounds wicked enough for me, count me in

One trade-off between Fighter and Paladin is that Fighters do not have to care a lick about Alignment, but Paladins - especially those that want real power - will NEED to be of the purest alignment.  One one hand, that helps us balance out the effort-reward ratio of the class, and on the other, it’s for pure theme.  Paladins are the righteous and virtuous defenders of innocents and the nemeses of the wicked.

Sounds very intriguing.  Me like.
And, I just happen to have a lvl 10 cleric sitting about gathering dust.

Cheers, Belly, for the proposed changes

I’d like to propose having extra beneficial effects when priests/pallys party.

Lynis has dropped once from angelic in the last 7-8 years and that was only becuase he was partying with a necro… which clerics cant do anyways. I havent been trying to stay angelic at all.. i could care less like you said means nothing to a fighter.

anyways, does this mean other classes will be looked at to have choices with subclasses?

Meee to Igor.. i made my cleric when i got my ass beat by a cleric in the arena

When I played, I cared nothing for alignment.  Then I heard of a weapon that was only good aligned to use, then I made an effort to at least try and not be so corrupt in my evilness...but it only lasted about a boot smile It will be interesting to see how the class plays out from a start to finish.

I like the alignmnet restrictions....it keeps clerics “honest.” With the ease of killing undeads adn the abumdance of them keepign my alignment Saintly has been pretty easy.  At lower levels it was harder but I few runs in the right areas per boot and all we fine.

Also to lyns’s comment about being Saintly all the time...at higher levels you tend to figt a lot more evil things because those are the exp things or have the eq.  Unless you are running through anshelm guards all the time being good I agree is not that hard.

Point of Clarification:

Will both retain a form of Bless?  And will the Paladin have heal but not for the group?

Correct - both will retain the prayers of the introductory Cleric levels, but the relative power of those prayers will change whether one chooses to be a Priest or a Paladin.  That is, Paladins will always have Heal and Bless, but they won’t be nearly as good as the Heal and Bless of a Priest.

It looks like I’ll be doing a chunk of the coding for this re-do of Clerics.  What that means is this change will NOT be going into effect this month.  Since I have never even touched Class code, there’s going to be a serious learning-curve for me, and that means it’ll take time.  I’ll keep you all as posted as possible.  For now, I’m cranking through the last half-dozen rooms of my new area in Indel, then I’ll turn my full attention to the Cleric re-code.

Woo hooo!  thanks for the clarification. Looking forward to both the new area and the re-code.  Make Tarmon do some work he’s not doing anything....

He loves when I say that.
